Quartz is one of the most common minerals found in rocks. Rock crystal is the clear variety. Colored varieties are caused by tiny inclusions of trace elements, or vacancies of something that would normally be there. These varieties are known by their own names, including smoky quartz (sometimes called smoky topaz), rose quartz, citrine, amethyst, aventurine, tiger eye, lemon quartz, and the whole family of chalcedonies. Synthetic quartz is lab created in many colors that have been given descriptive names.
