Citrine is a variety of quartz. Historically it has been confused with yellow topaz, but is now sold by it own name. Most citrine used for jewelry has been color enhanced. Both amethyst and smoky quartz will turn yellow if heat treated. Since all three of these gemstones are quartz with the same basic chemical composition, it apparently is not considered an imitation stone.
